Norman Wisdom was born Norman Joseph Wisdom on 4 February 1915 in Marylebone, London, into severe poverty. His father abandoned the family, and his mother placed him in a children's home; he ran away repeatedly, worked as a cabin boy and errand runner, and enlisted in the Merchant Navy and later the Army, where he learned boxing and developed the physical comedy skills that would define his career. After World War II service in communications and entertainment units, he broke into West End revues and radio, crafting a character called "the Gump"—a hapless clerk in an ill-fitting suit and cloth cap whose optimism survived endless pratfalls.

Wisdom starred in a string of British comedy films from the 1950s through the 1960s, including Trouble in Store, The Early Bird, and A Stitch in Time, playing Norman Pitkin, a lowly worker who inadvertently foils villains and wins respect through persistence rather than sophistication. His slapstick drew comparisons to Charlie Chaplin, whom Wisdom befriended late in Chaplin's life. Unlike ironic comedians of later decades, Wisdom appealed to family audiences with earnest sentiment and acrobatic falls performed at an age when most actors avoided injury risk. He also recorded chart hits such as "Don't Laugh at Me ('Cause I'm a Fool)" and appeared on television into the 1980s, including a dramatic turn in the BBC play Going Gently.

Remarkably, Wisdom became a cult hero in Albania during Enver Hoxha's isolationist regime, where his films were among the few Western productions allowed because authorities deemed them harmless portraits of working-class virtue. Albanians called him "Mr. Pitkin" and credited his films with offering rare laughter under dictatorship. Knighted in 2000, Wisdom continued charity work for children's causes and performed into his nineties before dying on 4 October 2010 on the Isle of Man. Film historians reassess his oeuvre as a bridge between music-hall tradition and postwar British cinema, and Albanian commentators still recall how his underdog character resonated where official culture forbade most foreign stars.
