Stan Lee

Stanley Martin Lieber was born in 1922 to Romanian-Jewish immigrants in Manhattan. He joined Timely Comics as a teenager, writing under the pen name Stan Lee while serving in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. For years he churned out romance and monster stories until publisher Martin Goodman asked for a superhero team to rival DC's Justice League.

With artist Jack Kirby, Lee launched the Fantastic Four in 1961, giving heroes flawed personalities and urban settings—a 'Marvel method' of collaboration where Lee plotted and dialogued after artists penciled pages. With Kirby and Steve Ditko he co-created the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, X-Men, and Spider-Man, whose teenage angst and quips revolutionized the genre.

Lee became Marvel's editor-in-chief and later chairman, narrating stories in editorial columns that spoke directly to readers. Legal disputes over creator credit persisted, especially with Kirby, yet Lee's promotional energy helped Marvel dominate the direct market. Marvel Studios films from 2008 onward turned his co-creations into the highest-grossing franchise in cinema history; his playful cameos became a trademark until his death in 2018.
