Biography

John McAfee was born in 1945 in Cinderford, England, and raised primarily in Virginia. Trained in mathematics, he worked as a programmer for NASA, Univac, Xerox, and Lockheed before writing one of the first commercial antivirus programs in the late 1980s. McAfee Associates, founded in 1987, rode the panic over computer viruses to rapid growth; he resigned in 1994 after selling most of his stake.

Wealth did not bring stability. McAfee pursued ventures in instant messaging, herbal antibiotics, and yoga, while his personal life drew tabloid attention. After moving to Belize, he became embroiled in local disputes and was named a person of interest in a neighbor's murder in 2012, fleeing to Guatemala and eventually returning to the United States. In his sixties and seventies he rebranded as a libertarian commentator and cryptocurrency advocate, running a quixotic 2016 presidential campaign on the Cyber Party ticket.

U.S. authorities indicted McAfee on tax evasion and securities fraud charges linked to cryptocurrency promotions. Arrested in Spain in 2020, he fought extradition until his death by apparent suicide in a Barcelona prison cell in June 2021, hours after a court authorized his transfer to Tennessee.
